Intel announces a faster version of its fastest PC chip

Article Abstract:

Intel Corp introduces a faster version of the 80486 DX2 microprocessor. The new product runs internally at 66 Mhz and sends and receives data at 33 MHz. The success of the 486 series has helped delay the introduction of the long-awaited PF5 microprocessor. Intel claims that the faster internal clock will speed up the computer's processing by 70 percent. Intel announced that over 30 vendors expect to use the chip in future products. The companies include IBM, DEC, Compaq, Dell Computer Corp and Tandy Computer Corp. Intel had released the initial version of the DX2 chip early in 1992 and has sold over 300,000 chips so far. The new chips cost $682 each in quantities of 1,000 or more.

Texas Instruments to sell computer unit to Hewlett

Article Abstract:

Texas Instruments Inc (TI) is selling its computer systems business to HP for an undisclosed amount. The contract will expand HP's distribution channel and rid TI of its failing division. Analysts estimate the deal to be worth several hundreds of millions of dollars. HP will obtain TI's 1500 series and receive access to the dealer channel. HP will not take over TI's notebook computer division or its software and telecommunications divisions. HP is the third ranking computer maker in the global market. TI is not one of the most successful computer sellers, but it is a $6.8 billion company.
