Iridium users may be cut off permanently

Article Abstract:

Iridium L.L.C. will shut down its service by Mar 17, 2000 if it fails to find an investor or a buyer who can provide additional funding by Mar 15. The $6 billion satellite telephone system is unlikely to be restarted once it is turned off, according to Motorola Inc, which built, operates and owns 18% of Iridium. The shut down also means that the 66 Iridium satellites will become space junk.

Bruised Teledesic at brink

Article Abstract:

Cellular pioneer Craig McCaw and Microsoft Corp Chmn Bill Gates' Teledesic project aims to provide high-speed, broadband digital communications to 95% of the world by 2004. The system design for the $10-billion project was scheduled to be finished on Mar 24, 2000 but was delayed because of soured relations between partners, unworkable economics for the system's original design and erosion of investor confidence due to the flameout of the Iridium satellite system. Faced with these difficulties, McGraw is still confident that the Teledesic project can easily be put back on track. He revealed a recovery plan that includes the redesign of the Teledesic system and the addition of investors.

BellSouth, US West, Sprint: merge or die?

Article Abstract:

BellSouth, US West and Sprint are the only leading telecommunications companies that have not announced mergers with other companies. Other industry experts laud the decision of the three firms to stay solo as experts believe that megamergers only establish companies that are more complicated and slow-moving in the fast-changing telecommunications industry. Other analysts, however, believe that the three companies will not be able to compete well with those who have enhanced their operations through mergers.
