It came out of the Alps: a monster bank has its American rivals worried

Article Abstract:

United Bank of Switzerland (UBS) is the result of a merger between two Swiss banking giants, Union Bank of Switzerland and Swiss Bank Corp. The new bank will be the second-largest in the world behind Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, with $60 billion in capital and assets of $600 billion. The merger underscores the global consolidation trend in the financial services industry. United States' banks alone have accomplished mergers valued at $238.7 billion through November, 1997. Consolidation is being accompanied by diversification into investments and other financial services.

President Bill Clinton publicly in Philadelphia requested that the House approve funding for the International Monetary Fund (IMF). However, many suspect that if the US does go into recession, voters may look for more neoprotectionists like Dick Gephardt.
