Political oddballs should be out of the main game

Article Abstract:

There were many notable events in Australia during 1997. Politically, many Liberal Party proposals were frustrated by a few Labor leaders. Sydney's most important issues were the loss of East Circular Quay and airport noise. Several biographies and memoirs made for memorable reading, and the most interesting movies were 'L.A. Confidential' and 'Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown.'

Rough race ahead at the AJC

Article Abstract:

A rough race is ahead at the Australian Jockey Club (AJC) (Randwick, Sydney). Running the club is a huge task and some problems involving inclement weather and other difficulties have added to it. The 10-member committee in charge has done a good job; now three club members are nominated to run against dedicated, efficient committee members already sitting.

The man in Ernest

Article Abstract:

A journalist who covered the Second World War recounts meeting the American writer Ernest Hemingway in the press camp near Normandy Beach after the D-Day invasion of France in 1944. The nightly meals with Hemingway and the other journalists are described. Hemingway's impact on the people he met and the allied army's entry into Paris are discussed.
