It's still a plain gray box, but the innards are changing; one of the PC's major bottlenecks to faster performance is getting its first major overhaul in nearly a decade

Article Abstract:

Computers undergo data processing jams because the current Peripheral Component Interconnect standard (PCI) cannot handle improved processor speed between the computer's processor and other components. The PCI standard, created in the 1990s by Intel, sends data across 32 wires with a 133 megabit-per-second bandwidth. A new standard, called Arapahoe, or 3GIO, also being developed by Intel, will appear in 2001 computers. It relies on serial technology without synchronization instead of parallel architecture. Old PCI network cards can work in new computers, but completely new systems will be required if users want to enjoy the full benefit of 50 times the current data processing speed.
