Judge's decision could trigger breakup of giant

Article Abstract:

The ruling handed down by US District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson could result in the breakup of Microsoft Corp. The federal judge decided that the software giant broke antitrust laws in its bid to dominate the industry. The monopoly and its tie up of the Explorer browser to its Windows operating system were both considered unlawful. Observers believe that a Microsoft breakup is unlikely although the ruling sets the stage for such a possibility. The decision also threatens to strengthen the over 100 civil cases that have been filed against the firm by competitors.

Questions haunt Microsoft's future

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp's breakup, which is expected to be the recommendation of the US Dept of Justice at the software manufacturer's antitrust trial, is expected to have a dramatic impact on the computer industry. The Justice Dept is of the opinion that dividing the software giant into Windows and Office units will result in intensified competition that will benifit the entire industry. Microsoft executives, on the other hand, disagree by saying that consumers want bundled software that only a unified firm can provide.
