Kmart takeover of Sears would create third-largest U.S. retailer

Discount merchant Kmart Holding Corp. is merging with US retailing icon Sears Roebuck and Co. to challenge the dominance of the global firm Wal-Mart Stores Inc. This takeover deal of $11 billion would create the third-largest retailer in the US and is expected to generate $500-million in annual cost savings over three years from 2004 through economies of scale in purchasing and other efficiencies.

Blockbuster spinoff marks new video era

DVD sales are becoming the domain of powerful retailers such as WalMart Stores Inc whereas video rentals are flat or rising slightly. Blockbuster stores in the United States business is challenged by cheap DVD sales at big-box retailers like Wal-Mart and Best Buy/Future Shop, as well as emerging video technologies such as video on demand and online downloads.

West Nile fears prompt run on bug repellant

Wal-Mart Canada Corp. is having difficulty keeping bug repellant on its store shelves following a rise in consumer fears about West Nile virus. Bug repellant, whose sales are usually heaviest in May and June, is produced by companies such as S.C. Johnson and Sons Ltd.
