Under friendly fire: land mines and fish test Canada-U.S. relations

Article Abstract:

A dispute over salmon fishing rights off the coast of British Columbia has strained Canadian-US relations. The issue escalated in Jul 1997 when Canadian fisherman blockaded a US ferry. The US's refusal to sign a Canadian-sponsored ban on land mines is another contentious issue.

Canadian Heritage Minister Michel Dupuy sparked a controversy in Jan 1995, when he said Canada would impose an 80% excise tax on Canadian editions of US publications such as 'Sports Illustrated.' US Trade Rep Mickey Kantor objected to the tax and threatened retaliation.
