Laptop sales spur strong earnings

Article Abstract:

Apple reports a 20 percent increase in 4th qtr FY 1992 income and record revenues, a result of the company's hugely successful PowerBook notebook computer. The PowerBook has sold more than $1 billion in a year's time, and is the most successful personal computer since the original IBM PC microcomputer. Apple's earnings hit $97.6 million, or 81 cents a share. Revenue rose 17 percent to $1.77 billion from $1.51 billion in the 4th qtr of the 1991 fiscal year. The financial success of the company reflects Apple's determination to gain greater market share by cutting its prices, gross profit margins and expenses. The industry had feared that Microsoft Windows could detract from Apple's sales, but that prediction seems to be less threatening as Apple's sales rise.
