Legislative gridlock on gun control remains firmly in place

Article Abstract:

Congress and the majority of state legislatures are unlikely to enact stricter gun-control laws this year despite calls from Pres Bill Clinton. The lack of gun control laws is attributed to the decline of gun-related crimes, the decline of gun violence involving children, Republicans' refusal to pass sweeping gun-control laws and the political influence of the National Rifle Assn.

All tobacco billboards will be prohibited starting Apr 22, 1999, as a result of the $206-billion settlement of a suit between the leading US tobacco firms and 46 states. Billions of dollars hang over Internet tax debate

Article Abstract:

The federal Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce has convened for the first time in Williamsburg, VA, to study and create an acceptable solution on how to tax electronic commerce. The 19-member panel will hear the sides of e-commerce firms on one hand, who said that imposing sales taxes could stunt the growth of the industry. On the other side are the retailers who are losing business to the tax-free Internet, cutting into the 36% of state and local government revenues that comes from sales taxes.
