Long-distance firm guns for local market, Internet

Article Abstract:

AT&T announced a plan to acquire cable television giant Tele-Communications Inc. for $32 billion. The development marks AT&T's entry into the digital age, with an attack on the local phone market and the Internet. AT&T will invest substantially to build a high-speed network capable of carrying voice, video and other kinds of digitized information on a single line into a customer's home or office. According to Michael Armstrong, AT&T's chairman and CEO, the move marks AT&T's aggressive attack on the nation's telecommunications market. The acquisition of TCI will give AT&T access to the former's 10.5 million subscribers in major markets such as Chicago, IL, and San Francisco, CA.

Skepticism dogs AT&T-TCI deal

Article Abstract:

AT&T Corp.'s $32-billion stock acquisition of Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI) is hounded by skepticism as AT&T's stock has dropped. TCI CEO John Malone said it was a mistake for the two companies to announce their merger before ironing out all the terms for creating a tracking stock for AT&T's consumer services division. He, however, remains confident AT&T shareholders will support the deal, particularly as they learn more about the terms. To simplify the pact, Malone recently consolidated some properties that TCI controls.
