Lost contract casts doubt on Tellabs deal for Ciena

Article Abstract:

Tellabs' acquisition of telecommunications equipment maker Ciena has become uncertain again after Ciena lost a supply contract with Digital Teleport. Although the contract is relatively small and Ciena will likely remain as a secondary supplier, the loss of the contract further diminishes the company's outlook from the point of view of investors. Michael Birck, Tellabs CEO, said that he was not aware that Ciena would lose the Digital Teleport contract at the time Tellabs and Ciena negotiated the deal. At present, the deal values Ciena at around $36 per share, but analysts believe that the deal has to be reworked or abandoned as Ciena's shares are trading at half of $36.
