Mall owners fill gaps with non-retail tenants

Article Abstract:

Shopping center owners throughout the US are seeking non-retail tenants, such as colleges and telemarketers, to occupy space abandoned by failing retail stores. For example, local officials in Greensboro, NC, are negotiating to convert Carolina Circle Mall into a community college campus. Since spring 2000, the under-performing Montgomery Ward and Co Inc has been the mall's only tenant. Also, Carousel Mall in San Bernardino, CA, which has lost two anchor tenants that include Montgomery Ward, has leased 20,000-sq-ft of former retail space to Starwood Hotels for a telemarketing center.

Can courts' cloak of secrecy be deadly?

Article Abstract:

Lawyers and safety advocates contend that a lof of lives could have been saved if court documents about lawsuits involving deaths and injuries from car accidents caused by defective Firestone tires were made public. Firestone was able to hide from the public its tire problems by paying plaintiffs millions of dollars behind closed doors. In most of the lawsuits, the courts ordered the claimaints not to disclose the financial terms of the settlement and possible evidence about the safety defects.

The newspaper, 'USA Today,' offers free professional tax help available through its Tax Hotline. The hotline is manned by volunteers from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants who are ready to answer questions that will help Americans prepare their tax returns. The USA Today Hotline will hopefully ease the difficulty of tax preparation, which was made more complicated by the issuance of additional tax rules contained in the 2000 Standard Federal Tax Reporter.
