Maritime wranglings run deep

Article Abstract:

RMS Titanic Inc's salvage rights to the Titanic which was granted by US District Judge J. Calvitt Clarke in Norfolk, VA, in 1993 have been amended by the same judge on Jul 28, 2000. Following a growing controversy in which the firm disclosed plans of retrieving artifacts from the interior and cutting off historically significant parts of the ship, the company has been challenged by several nations, marine scientists and the Natl Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration who want to limit access to the sunken ship. Thus, in Judge Clarke's amended ruling, he ordered the firm not to enter the interior and damage or cut off any part of the wreck.

Back to the Titanic

Article Abstract:

RMS Titanic Inc's plan to salvage artifacts from the interior of the Titanic and remove historically significant structures from the ship has been put on hold by a federal district court in Norfolk, VA. The court granted salvage rights to the firm in 1993, but the growing controversy surronding RMS Titanic Inc's plan has moved the court to rule that the firm must not damage or cut off any part of the wreck nor sell any of the artifacts it will retrieve.
