Microsoft arms itself to conquer Net as it did PCs

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp on Apr 30, 2001 introduced its word-processing, spreadsheet and slide-presentation software, called Office XP. The new software, which is designed to replace the current Windows operating system, is expected to be on most personal computers (PCs) sold after October. The launch of XP alarms Microsoft's competitors who fear that the software giant will use the new operating software as a weapon for dominating Internet goods and services provided by the company and its allies.

EBay, Amazon, others balk at Microsoft's Internet standard

Amazon and eBay are fighting Microsoft's attempt to force all Web-sites to embrace an abbreviated version of Microsoft's Platform for Privacy Preferences, computer-coded rules for collecting and using personal data.

Microsoft privacy product may confuse consumers
