Microsoft nails some pirates: an international Far Eastern chase catches counterfeiters

Article Abstract:

A Microsoft Corp salesman uncovered the tip of a software counterfeiting ring in a software store in Taipei, Taiwan, which has proven to be a wide-ranging organization that has produced pirated versions of Microsoft's MS-DOS 5.0 in English, French, German, Italian and Swedish. Microsoft had felt secure that its latest operating system version could not be counterfeited due to the holographic image on the package, but an investigation in China proves that up to $150 million of bogus Microsoft products are being produced in China, including the holograms. Microsoft estimates losses of up to $1 billion annually through piracy. The problem lies in the Chinese government's seeming reticence to cooperate beyond the investigation and turn over to Microsoft the molds from which the counterfeits are made. China has agreed to uphold copyright laws to avoid US trade sanctions, but it is still on a 'priority watch' list of countries that provide inadequate protection for intellectual property.

A little light on a black art

Article Abstract:

Network General Inc introduces its $15,000 Expert Sniffer network analyzer software system that helps network managers oversee their networks in a more scientific manner. Expert Sniffer monitors traffic patterns on a network to track any developing problems. Expert Sniffer analyzes the network protocol and reports on its status in an understandable manner rather than in hexadecimal code. The product goes so far as to suggest problems and give solutions in a human-interactive way. Network General designed the product to perform the way a person would if a person could analyze a network. Expert Sniffer provides expertise for managers, and performs the drudgery of wading through data systems in search of anomalies.
