Prosecuting evil: a Canadian judge pursues international war criminals

Arbour's detractors claim she is not vigorous enough as chief prosecutor for the Yugoslav and Rwandan war crime tribunals. Although she admits feeling frustrated about the number of accused war criminals still at large, she asserts that the tribunal should be permitted to do its job no matter how long it takes.

Blown away: the IRA shatters peace hopes with a massive bombing

Article Abstract:

The bombing of the South Quay Plaza, a docklands complex a quarter-mile from the Canary Wharf office tower, injured more than 100. The bombing, which ended a ceasefire in effect since Aug 31, 1994, took many by surprise including the leadership of Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA.

High above it all: how war brought peace to Rwanda's gorillas

Article Abstract:

Rwanda's mountain gorilla population, which stands at roughly 300 animals, appears to have been an unintended beneficiary of the violence between Tutsis and Hutus. Wildlife advocates report that poaching has declined because Rwanda Patriotic Army patrols limit access to gorilla habitats.
