Ottawa to regulate bank closings

Article Abstract:

Finance Minister Paul Martin's overhaul of the financial services would require Canadian banks to give at least four months of notice of branch closings. However, regulations to allow the government to block branch closings will not be introduced even though there is a strong clamor from consumer groups to adopt a more intervensionist approach. Martin is pushing for a broader consumer protection package that would include greater privacy protection.
