Canadian philanthropist Joan Chalmers sent a letter to the Ontario Arts Council signalling her intention to withdraw support from the organization. The Ontario Arts Council has received $11 million from the Chalmers family over the years. Chalmers wants to be more involved in decision making.

Choy's 'The Jade Peony' is a semi-autographical novel that explores the adaptation of Vancouver's Chinese community to the Chinese Exclusions Act of 1923, which prevented Chinese women from immigrating to Canada. The ruling split families and created an environment of secrecy and fear.
