Return to sender: techies leave dot-coms

Article Abstract:

A small number of entrepreneurial employees from the high technology sector are quietly leaving their companies to join old-economy, traditional firms for a variety of reasons. The shift is a 180-degree departure from prevailing trends, but while job hopping has become a common occurrence, statistics have not been kept on how many workers have defected from technology firms. However, a Jan 2000 survey by CareerPath.com has found that four out of 10 people will likely change their jobs during 2000.

Gillette plans to eliminate 4,700 workers

Article Abstract:

Gillette has reported that it will lay off 4,700 workers as part of a company restructuring plan. The job cuts that represent 11% of its labor force is prompted by the firm's lower-than-expected third quarter sales. The Boston, MA-headquartered Gillette, which also intends to discontinue operations 14 factories and 12 warehouses worldwide, is expecting the move to save over $200 million annually. The company, with a global workforce of 43,000, has operations in California, Illinois, North Carolina, Iowa, Georgia and Minnesota.
