More people die despite recall

Article Abstract:

At least three people and four other have been hurt while riding in vehicles with recalled Firestone tires during the 15 days that have elapsed since the recall was announced on Aug 9, 2000. Replacement of 6.5 million P235/75R-15 size Wilderness tires made in Decatur, IL, and all ATX, and ATX II of that size has been slow despite efforts by Ford Motor Co, whose Explorer vehicle carries the tires, and Bridgestone/Firestone. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reports of at least 62 deaths and 100 injuries from accidents involving all sizes of Wilderness, ATX and ATX II tires through Aug 9, 2000.

Firestone reassurances fall on skeptical ears

Article Abstract:

Firestone has announced that it has determined the reasons for tread separation in its recalled tires and that its other tires are safe. The company declared that a combination of factors caused the tires to fail. It ascertained that those factors do not affect its other tires and that it has taken steps to catch safety problems sooner. It stated that the recalls made in Aug 2000 was more than adequate to protect the public. However, safety advocates, tire experts, lawyers and federal regulators are not convinced and recall may go beyond the 6.5 million tires already targeted.
