Move over, Deep Blue, Eliza's next

Article Abstract:

IBM Corp has unveiled a multibillion-dollar research offensive on Apr 26, 2001, aimed at creating business computers capable of doing simple tasks on their own. The company is planing to marshal hundreds of scientists and pour several billion dollars into Project Eliza, short for 'e-lizard' for five years or so. The company's objective is to create intelligent computers that can handle simple tasks, such as correcting system failues and warding off attacks from hackers. Eliza's technology could also be utilized in Blue Gene, IBM's supercomputer under development and aimed for biotechnology research.

Gateway restates 2000 results, shows bigger loss

Article Abstract:

Struggling PC maker Gateway Computer Systems has revised its profits and revenues for 2000 after a year-end audit uncovered questionable accounting practices used by the previous management. The amended results show a $128 million loss for 4th qtr 2000, greater than the $94-million loss previously reported by Gateway. The company also reduced its net income for the period from $316 million to $214 million but its annual revenue remains unchanged at $9.6 billion.

Kmart, Yahoo talk blue-light special deal

Article Abstract:

Retail chain Kmart Corp has announced a $63-million online commerce deal with Internet portal Yahoo! Inc and Softbank Venture Capital. Under the deal, the partners will form a new e-commerce firm called BlueLight.com, which will be 60% owned by Kmart and will be featured by Yahoo on its entry page. The deal also involves the establishment of free Internet kiosks in 2,200 Kmart stores, and a $62.5-million investment in BlueLight by Softbank.
