Telstra is attempting to make an alliance with a major foreign communications carrier, but the Australian government wants the company to remain in the hands of Australian shareholders. Approximately 31% of Australians own shares in Telstra, but opposition to privatizing the company could decrease when small owners prefer more efficient performance and dividends from their holdings.

Seven's fifth column: media boss Kerry Stokes' opposition to Singtel's takeover of Optus endangers the very national interest he wants to protect

Article Abstract:

Kerry Stokes, head of Seven Network, has stated that he will launch a protest campaign if the A$14 billion bid for Optus by Singapore Telecommunications is approved. Stokes is a strong supporter of foreign investment, but feels that this deal would allow the Singapore government to gain access to sensitive information in Australia.
