National semiconductor halts Cyrix PC chip production

Article Abstract:

National Semiconductor Corp has discontinued its Cyrix personal computer chip operations on May 5, 1999, amid intense competition from rivals Intel and Advanced Micro Devices. The firm will instead concentrate on manufacturing chips for cable TV set-top boxes and other so-called information appliances, as company CEO Brian Halla implies that the investment needed to lead in that market is considerably lower than the investment required to compete with Intel in the PC-chip market. National Semiconductor, which will divest its stake in a PC chip-production facility in Maine and layoff 550 employees, miscalculated when it believed that Intel would not compete to launch chips into PCs priced under $1,000.
