From rags to capitalism

Article Abstract:

Poland's Szczecin shipyard has become famous for its transformation from near-bankruptcy under the former Communist regime to a capitalist success story. The shipyard's success is attributed to the efforts of its dynamic executive and the efficacy of American ideas even without the infusion of American money and foreign investments. Ten years ago, the shipyard was just like any other communist enterprise. It had too many workers and relied on the government for financing and customers. From a near-bankrupt firm, it has become profitable with 1998 revenues of $600 million.
