New battle line in cola war: Wendy's joins Coke

Article Abstract:

Coca-Cola has been named by Wendy's International as sole softdrink supplier for the next decade, a move that comes just four months since an anti-trust suit was filed against the softdrink bottler. Gary Hemphill, vice president at Beverage Marketing, said the battle for the $15-billion fountain market has just started. The Wendy's contract came even as PepsiCo said in its lawsuit that Coca-Cola is monopolizing the fountain segment of the soft-drink business. Prior to the Wendy deal, Dairy Queen renewed its Coke contact for seven years.

P&G picks up Clairol for $4.95 billion cash

Article Abstract:

Procter and Gamble (P&G) has bought Clairol from Bristol-Myers for $4.95 billion in cash. The acquisition allows P&G to gain ownership of the Clairol, Herbal Essences and Nice 'n Easy brands, which complement its Pert, Head & Shoulders, Pantene and Vidal Sassoon brands. However, P&G could likely sell one of its hair-care brands just to gain antitrust approval for the deal. Its shares also fell by $2.23 to $65.25 after the deal was announced.
