New-economy firms lift old-line companies

Article Abstract:

Traditional, large and financially stable firms also called blue-chip companies are benefitting from the emergence of business-to-business online startups that are bringing together buyers and suppliers in quick electronic auctions. These startups are typically saving customers 10%- 25%. As a result, the stocks of blue-chip businesses have risen and once again attracted investor attention. Even so, considerable investment in business-to-business online startups and other technology stocks continue unabated, but these firms are vulnerable because their future depends on keeping their existing customers, expanding their base and satisfying investor expectation.

Energy prices unlikely to subside soon

Article Abstract:

Oil prices are likely to stay in the $30-a-barrel range for the rest of 2001 and will decline only modestly, by about a dollar, in 2001. the independent information arm of the Energy Dept, the Energy Information Administration, has published its short-term energy outlook on Feb 6, 2001. The forecast states that the balance of world oil demand and supply suggests a continuation of the tight inventory situation in industrialized countries seen in 2000. The good news is that the price for some fuels may have peaked.
