New video technology lets doctors examine patients many miles away

Article Abstract:

The medical profession is using video teleconferencing equipment to help doctors at remote locations collaborate on diagnosing and performing surgical operations. Doctors at one facility can discuss the patient and examine his body from hundreds of miles away using a two-way interactive system. This allows patients to remain at local hospitals and this gives local hospitals greater surgical ability and keeps profits at the local hospital. The Federal Health Care Financing Administration runs the Medicare program that uses teleconferencing. The administration does not believe that the consultation should be reimbursable under the Federal program. There is still some debate regarding whether or not the video-oriented consultation is medically viable and whether the use of video in the healthcare industry will keep costs down.
