Crowning indignities

Article Abstract:

Queen Noor, wife of late King Hussein of Jordan, has fallen from public favor and her position of influence. Instead, King Abdullah II, who received his title a few days before Hussein's death, has proved himself both popular with the people and politically adept, as he pushes for good relationships with Syria and Saudi Arabia and allies himself with the West. However, the political and economic turmoil in Jordan will be a test to the new king's abilities.

A lion in winter

Article Abstract:

Jordan's ailing King Hussein removed his brother Hassan from the position of crown prince and heir to the throne, and installed his eldest son Abdullah in his place. Hassan has served his brother loyally for 34 years, but is uncharismatic and unpopular with Jordanians. Hassan and his wife angered King Hussein by acting as if the king were already dead, appointing a new cabinet and planning to redecorate the palace.
