Women and Human Rights

Article Abstract:

Pres Bill Clinton's administration supports the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), but the Senate has failed to ratify the convention. Supporters claim CEDAW aims to protect women from many political and personal abuses, including being sold into sexual slavery, domestic violence, genital mutilation, and political oppression. Critics of CEDAW claim it force societies to adapt to UN notions of gender roles in society.
