Offspring upstages parent in Palm Inc.'s initial trading

In its initial public offering, Palm Inc., maker of the Palm-Pilot hand-held device, began at $38, went as high as $165, and settled at $95 a share, giving the firm a market value of $53.3 billion, while its parent, 3Com Corp. is valued at only $28 billion.

3Com plans late July distribution of Palm shares

Article Abstract:

3Com Corp. has announced that it will distribute its shares in Palm Inc. to its own shareholders. Palm went public on March 2. Its shares rose and fell, but 3Com's share price has remained lower than the value of the Palm shares it owns. 3Com's board has authorized the firm to spend up to $1 billion repurchasing its shares after the distribution to shareholders on July 27.

MIPS Computer Systems Inc may be the most popular computer issue that has come to the market in a long time. But is the long-term outlook that good? MIPS is a pioneer and leader in reduced instruction-set computers, the technology that is achieving greater speeds than comparable devices and allowing workstations to offer the performance of much larger computers. MIPS' business strategy consists of a network of partnerships and business relationships, MIPS' design of RISC chips, and the licensing of the design to five partners in return for large fees. MIPS' business ties reassure investors, and the trend away from mainframes reaffirms MIPS market position. The best time to buy the issues may be now, because MIPS may find itself in conflict with its own best customers.
