A personal narrative is presented describing a journalist's experiences of travelling with Australia's then Prime Minister Gough Whitlam on a ground-breaking diplomatic visit to China in 1972. Whitlam was presented with a birthdya cake from Premier Chou En-Lai to celebrate his 55th birthday in Shanghai, and it was announced on the same day that President Nixon would follow Whitlam's successful visit to China with one of his own, thus ensuring Whitlam's success in the next Australian election.
