Once-bright future of optical fiber dims

Article Abstract:

Enough fiber optic cable has been laid around the world to reach to the sun, but now that there is a huge slowdown, there aren't all the connections to put the cable to use. Consequently, prices are going up for those who do have high-speed Internet connections. There is concern because of the news coming from Nortel Networks, 360networks and others. In Europe companies are trying to make deals in order to reduce huge debt. For the firms that built intercontinental networks, the scale of speculation is being compared to the 1870's and speculation in railroads.
