Online brokers suffer with drop in trading volume

Article Abstract:

Online brokers have reported a sharp decline in their volume as of May compared to levels in April 2000. Share prices of the brokers are slipping and continues to decline. An analyst commented that the fall in volume and falling share prices constitute a "double whammy" for the online brokers. When their volume is low, online brokerage spend more to solicit more customers and also collect less interest since customers stop borrowing to acquire stocks. The slowdown is due to the expected interest rate hike to be announced by the Federal Reserve.

Article Abstract:

Investors should take advantage of the emergence of online music. Salomon Smith Barney predicts that roughly 11% of music revenue will come from downloaded music by 2001. The online trend in the music industry has been spearheaded by the rapid success of Napster, a site which has enabled over 10 million registered users to download music and demonstrates that online music is not just for the technologically savvy. The trend is further prompted by the desire by artists to break free from the control of record companies.
