The Bushehr Project, a joint activity of Iran and Russia may look like an electrical-power plant, but Western Intelligence officials and diplomats feel that Russia's knowledge and materials may soon be diverted to nuclear weapons. The Atomic Energy ministry, Minatom, campaigning to market Russian nuclear know-how to developing countries, is developing business relations without worrying about its adverse effects.

The Yukos endgame

Article Abstract:

Yukos, in Russia, would pay its tax bill with stock, charged against its largest oil company or end up in the hands of a company friendly to the Kremlin, effectively renationalizing the firm and giving Vladimir Putin better control of a strategic resource. Putin needs foreign investors to achieve his aim of doubling GDP by 2010, and investors are not going to walk away from Russia's rich oil- and gas fields.

Russian oil industry is in the global limelight ever since the September 2001 attacks, which have redoubled concerns over dependency on the Middle East. The YukosSibneft deal has sent the shares in the Russian oil industry soaring, and the Russian market has risen 500 percent on dollar terms since 1999.
