Opportunity knocks

Article Abstract:

Pre-eminent Wall Street bull, Abby Joseph Cohen, chief market strategist, Goldman Sachs, US investment bank, is optimistic and sees the drop in stock prices of mid-1998 a buying opportunity. The research team on which she relies sees inflation/interest rates and job growth indicating a healthy economy. Cohen's group's 1998 year-end prediction for the Dow remains 9,300. She expects no major deterioration in the US economy and does not consider the situation of Russia a significant factor for the US. Problems with Japan and Asia she sees as already reflected in the market.

Global capitalism, R.I.P.?

Article Abstract:

Much of the world does not have the values needed for free markets, yet capitalists pretended otherwise, and a time of reckoning has come. Countries had become overdependent on foreign capital. Fear of flight of capital is feeding on itself. World stock market values are dropping and may be down for years. Even in Hong Kong, government intervention has been resorted to, an indication of desperation. Most American economists, however think the US will not enter a recession, but that may be naive.

The crash of '99

The US economy after seven years of growth and expansion may experience some difficulties or even a recession. However, as global financial crisis causes more losses in exports, the US could experience low consumer spending and a stock market slump.
