Ottawa's air ruling opened Pandora's box: experts

Article Abstract:

The Canadian government's decision to suspend competition rules in the airline industry for 90 days has developed into a situation that was not anticipated prior to the ruling. The eased rivalry policy, presented as a means of saving Canadian Airlines International Ltd, has developed into a battle between Onex Corp and Air Canada. The disagreement between the two companies will reach the courts in mid-Sep 1999 and observers are worried that no entity will emerge as the winner.
