The impact of Yasser Arafat's death on Palestinian statehood, the U.S. relations with Israel and the problems of Israeli settlers in the Gaza Strip are some of the main issues that are bothering Israelis and Palestinians. The Palestinian elections in January 2005 are seen as the beginning of a more hopeful chapter in intertwined histories of Israelis and Palestinians.

Some analysts fear that peace efforts between the Israel and the Palestinians would fail as long as a two-state solution is viable. The uncertainties regarding the need for the Palestinian democracy and the Israeli's expanded settlements, which makes it impossible for the Palestinians to establish the state envisioned in peace negotiations of the 1990s, are discussed.
