Patent disputes: In the spotlight

Article Abstract:

The U.S Patent and Trade Mark Office (PTO) has gained unusual attention and criticism for some of the patents it approves even as it copes with an intimidating backlog of pending applications and a continuing surge of new ones. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) credited the patent office for taking a number of important and necessary actions to attract and retain qualified patent examiners, while criticizing the systemic weaknesses in the PTO's efforts to automate the processing of patent applications.

Article Abstract:

The U.S. Congress incorporated cost-of-living allowances (COLAs) that provided retroactive adjustments for beneficiaries in 1950 and 1952 as by 1950, inflation had eaten away at the value of Social Security benefits. In the 1960s, President Lyndon B. Johnson launched a series of federal programs like Medicare, which included measures that strengthened the safety net provided by Social Security.

Domestic Poverty: anti-poverty proposals
