Penalty calls

Article Abstract:

The latest draft ruling issued by the Australian Taxation Office around the end of 2005 is discussed. This raised the possibility that many listed investment companies (LIC) investors could miss out on the normal 50 percent capital gains tax discount while some of the most likely to qualify for the concession are the current members of Australian Listed Investment Companies Association such as Argo Investments, Australian United Investment Company, and Brickworks Investment Company.

The hedge of reality

Article Abstract:

Participants may be subject to Foreign Investment Fund rules, and (since the funds take profits from buying and selling during a year) the earnings will likely not qualify for the capital gains concession availbale to profits on investments that have been held for at least one year.
