Philanthropy in America: Biblical roots

Article Abstract:

Charity has biblical roots, as inferred from the Bible, the Koran and the Book of Deuteronomy, all of which urge the followers of the respective religions to donate towards charity in cash and kind, thereby contributing for their own good, as well as for the good of the society. The scale of fortunes accumulated by the likes of Carnegie, Rockefeller, and banker Andrew Mellon in the modern US have necessitated the channeling of money towards charity through the erection of foundations to achieve meaningful results, and such foundations offer proof of how charity has evolved over time.

Philanthropy in America: Rockers and volunteers

Article Abstract:

Former US President Ronald Reagan encouraged voluntarism as an essential part of social-service programs, and he wanted to cut back government participation, allowing philanthropies to pick up the slack. American celebrities who have supported charitable efforts include presidents, and a long line of musicians and film stars who donate part of the revenue to projects fighting AIDS, malaria and other illnesses.

Philanthropy in America: Wealth transfer?

Article Abstract:

Some US philanthropy scholars have predicted a major increase in philanthropic contributions as a result of the inter-generational wealth transfer from baby boomer parents to their children. Experts state the continued growth of wealth would trigger a philanthropy boom, because of the commonly observed social trend that donors tend to give more when they feel that their assets are secure.
