Philanthropy in America: New directions

Article Abstract:

The former US President Hoover, who had built and directed pioneering famine-relief projects in post-World War I Western Europe and Russia, tried to enlist philanthropies in fighting the Great Depression, and he reminded the Americans of individual responsibility to the neighbors. Cooperation between the government and philanthropic organizations grew closer on the domestic front as well as on foreign philanthropic projects, and foundation grants were given to programs aimed at poverty, race relations, urban problems, and as investments in minority-owned businesses as initiated by the Ford Foundation

Philanthropy in America: In poor nations, philanthropy is cost of doing business

Article Abstract:

Modern corporate philanthropy is not only designed to achieve social benefits that indirectly benefit the companies' bottom lines, but some charitable programs also end up as investment opportunities. Philanthropy projects such as microfinance projects, devised in 1976 by Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus, are examples of such programs, which originated as purely philanthropic enterprises, but eventually attracted the attention of conventional investors, who set up microfinance operations in poor nations.
