Programmable Flow: Pathways to Glory

Article Abstract:

Low-cost, high-speed, solid-state control systems can take partial responsibility for the tremendous changes in the material handling industry. Robots are among the most impressive machines in the automated factory. Automatic guided vehicles (AGV) are perhaps the most flexible and programmable of equipment. Manufacturing Resources Planning (MRPII) is an approach to doing business that links various departments of a corporation. The support and commitment of top management to the use of MRPII is critical for its successful implemention. Today in many systems, fully one-half of the cost of the entire turnkey system represents controls. Photographs are included.

Philippines: plowshares into swords

Article Abstract:

Philippine President Joseph Estrada, the former movie actor who became a politician, has stumbled in his policy regarding the military insurgency occurring on Mindanao. His offhand comments about waging war on the rebels may have helped start actual battles between the rebels and the Philippine army, which resulted in over 30 deaths and the creation of 80,000 civilian refugees. Estrada scheduled talks with Moro Islamic Liberation Front leader, Salamat Hashim.
