Phone firm faces $1M 'slamming' fine

Article Abstract:

All American Telephone, a telephone company based in Fort Worth, TX, may be fined $1 million as proposed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), allegedly due to "slamming." The FCC asserts that the company forged a number of signatures on authorization forms of clients in the area of New York City, NY. Since 1997, the FCC has received 251 complaints against All American. All American has been given 30 days to either pay the suggested fine or appeal to the FCC to reduce or withdraw the fine. In April 1998, the FCC fined The Fletcher Cos. over $5 million for "slamming."

Bell Atlantic in talks with Vodafone

Article Abstract:

Bell Atlantic Corp has announced that it is negotiating to form a national wireless network alliance with Vodafone AirTouch. The proposed alliance would enable both carriers to compete on a national basis with AT&T Wireless, Sprint PCS and Nextel, which offer flat-rate pricing plans. Bell Atlantic and Vodafone AirTouch have a combined wireless revenue $9 billion and 17 million wireless customers in 1998.

Covad Communications CEO resigns

Article Abstract:

Robert Knowling has announced his resignation as CEO of Covad Communications Co on Nov 1, 2000. His resignation came at a time when the telephon company is financially struggling, with a wider-than-expected third-quarter-2000 loss and stock losing more than 90% of its value since Mar 2000. Knowling has been replaced by Covad Communications board member Frank Marshall.
