Planet pay dirt

Article Abstract:

A group called the Reynolds Astronomical Photometry Team in Canberra may have found a planet orbiting a distant star, a find that seems to increase the chance that there is life beyond Earth. The team is made up of members of the amateur Canberra Astronomical Society and has observed the planet brightening a star some 26,000 light years away near the center of the Milky Way. The effect is called microlensing and shows that a massive object, another star, is passing in front of it. The star had a dark object 5.5 times the mass of Jupiter with it.
