United, US Airways hope $4.3B merger deal flies

Article Abstract:

US Airways Group's $4.3 billion merger with UAL Corp will position UAL as the biggest airline in the US and in the world. It would also provide UAL with a commanding share of air travel at about a dozen major airports from San Francisco to Washington. No fare increases will be implemented by the companies for two years after the completion of the merger deal. However, the transaction will likely encounter opposition from critics charging that allowing such a merger between the No 1 and the No 6 carriers would set off a series of merger deals in the industry.

United, US Airways face obstacle course

Article Abstract:

United Air Lines Inc's proposed acquisition of US Airways Inc is facing greater obstacles from federal regulators compared to airline mergers during the 1980s. The deal, which will create the biggest airline in the world, must secure the consent of the Democrat-led Justice Dept. Antitrust experts believe that the government agency think that it was not tough enough in opposing the airline mergers of the 1980s that created six large carriers and eliminated a number middle-sized ones.
