Private misgivings

Article Abstract:

The $250 mil establishment of a new university, Melbourne University Private, is met with optimism and pessimism. Professor Alan Gilbert, the vice-chancellor of the University of Melbourne, claims it is necessary for the corporate community that a new university be established. However, others believe the university will reflect corporate greed rather than academic stewardship. University officials claim the university will create needed postgraduate courses, new jobs, and give students more options.

People the nation. (includes related article on early Australian explorer)

Article Abstract:

A debate exists in Australia regarding the optimum population for the country in the 21st century. One side of the argument contends that limited environmental resources demand that the population levels be stabilised and that immigration should be reduced. The other side of the argument contends the country has a moral responsibility to support more people and that immigration spurs economic growth.
