Privatization power play

Ontario's Mike Harris administration intends to go forward with the privatization of the provincial utility Ontario Hydro, despite the absence of voter support for the change. Harris's close aide, Bill Farlinger, is now the chairman of Ontario Hydro, and he is expected to lead its privatization.

Ontario cuts back: Mike Harris's government slashes spending

Article Abstract:

Ontario Premier Mike Harris plans to cut $2 billion from the province's budget in 1995, and has already implemented cuts such as reducing welfare payments by 21.6%. Job creation, subway and business grants have also been reduced. Critics say the cuts will hurt the poor the most.

Taking it to the street: in Ontario and Alberta, labor rallies against spending cuts

Article Abstract:

More than 12,000 people participated in a rally in London, Ontario, to protest massive budget cuts made by Ontario Premier Mike Harris. Harris has vowed to eliminate the province's $9 billion budget deficit, and has made substantial cuts to welfare, health care and education.
