Article Abstract:

The Howard government is pressing for a comprehensive new multilateral trade negotiations in 2000. Australian government hopes to achieve a global trade deal without trade barriers. Tim Fischer, the acting prime minister, contends free trade will produce more jobs and a higher living standard for all Australians. However, World Trade Organization members are divided between those who want a full new round of talks and those who prefer limited trade.

Australia's defense ministers are poised for a battle with the Howard government on defense procurement. John Moore, the new minister for defense, is considering a number of reforms including more outsourcing that is estimated to save about $1 billion in savings. Moore is also considering splitting contract awards between companies as a way of spurring defense industries.
