Puerto Rico's status

Article Abstract:

Puerto Rico's governor, Pedro J. Rossello, in Sep 1998, made a trip to Washington to urge congressional leaders to pass a bill authorizing a referendum for Puerto Ricans to choose between statehood, commonwealth, or independence. However, Majority Leader Trent Lott stated the Senate would not have time to consider the issue in 1998 before adjournment. Despite the Senate's failure, Puerto Ricans will vote on their status at end of the year.

What political status is best for Puerto Rico?

Article Abstract:

Many in Congerss believe that Puerto Rico should become the 51st state of the US. Although they agree that the association between two countries has been beneficial, Puerto Rico is in a state of political inequality that can only be resolved through statehood. However, others believe that Puerto Rico should keep their national identity but continue and strengthen its economic ties with the US.
